On January 26, 1837 in Washington D.C., President Andrew Jackson signed a bill making Michigan the nation’s 26th state. Today, our beloved state, the one and only mitten state, celebrates our 175 birthday!

Known as the Great Lakes State, Michigan has the longest freshwater shoreline in the world. With four of the five Great Lakes surrounding Michigan, you are never more than 85 miles away from a Great Lake, no matter where you are in the state. In addition to the beautiful Great Lakes, Michigan has over 64,000 inland lakes to enjoy.

Our state has a rich culture, apparent in cities across the state. Michiganders can explore art museums, listen to a symphony orchestra in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo and attend fairs and festivals all year long.

From the sandy dunes and beaches to the snow covered ski resorts up north to the beautiful colors in the fall, Michigan offers unbelievably stunning scenery, no matter what time of the year.

There is so much to love about Michigan! Celebrate Michigan’s 175th birthday by telling us what you love most about our great state.

According to an article in The Detroit News, Michigan’s economy is recovering from the recession at the second-fastest pace in the United States. Revitalizing carmakers and local manufactures are contributing factors, according to a new index of state growth.

The index measures growth since 2008, at a time in which the country was in a recession and two of the big three automakers were on a path to bankruptcy.

Six components of growth, including: job creation, personal income, tax revenue, housing prices, mortgage delinquencies and performance of Bloomberg stock indexes that track the share prices of locally based companies, were all tracked. Michigan’s major gain came from a 31% improvement in the stock price of companies in the state.

Governor Snyder and former Governor Granholm agree this is great news for Michigan. Through we have a long way to go, this is definitely a positive sign for the state of Michigan.

Newsweek studied more than 1,000 of the top high schools across the nation to determine which schools were preforming well above the others in addition to preparing students not only for college, but for life. Saline High School was the only school in Washtenaw County to make the list with their highest ranking yet – 222nd. Among the 16 high schools in Michigan to make the list, Saline High School ranked 4th.

Six metrics were used to rank the top high schools:

  • Graduation rate
  • College matriculation
  • Advanced Placement (AP) tests taken per graduate
  • Average SAT/ACT scores
  • Average Advance Placement/International Baccalaureate/AICE scores
  • Advanced Placement courses offered

According to the Saline-Milan Patch, the Saline Area School district graduated 96% of its students on time and 97% of seniors enroll in college after graduation. In addition, the number of students taking AP courses has doubled from 400 to 800 in just a few years. The recent increase in the number of students taking AP courses is a major contributor to Saline’s recent jump in the ranking.
