On Numbers recently analyzed educational attainment in 269 communities, all with 100,000 residents or more, across the country to find the leading brainpower cities. Devising a 5-part formula to determine the leading brainpower cities, On Numbers factored the number of adults (25 and older) at each of following levels:

  • Dropped out before high school graduation
  • Stopped at high school diploma
  • Stopped at associate degree or attended college but stopped without any degree
  • Stopped at bachelor’s degree
  • Earned graduate degree and/or professional degree

On Numbers named Ann Arbor (University of Michigan), Cambridge, Massachusetts (Harvard University), and Berkley, California (University of California) the top three leaders in brainpower among the nation’s major cities.

According to On Numbers, 75% of all adults (25 or older) hold bachelor’s degrees in Ann Arbor and 43% also have earned advanced degrees.

For the fourth consecutive year, the University of Michigan Medical School is ranked among the top ten medical schools, rising to 6th in terms of total funding from the National Institutes of Health and 2nd among medical schools affiliated with public universities.

The University of Michigan Medical School’s research brought hundreds of millions of dollars into the state of Michigan in the last year. According to a national study, the spending of each research dollar results in approximately $2.60 of direct economic activity. The total estimated economic impact is nearly $1.2 billion. The figure includes spending by the University of Michigan, spending by employees whose salaries are in some way supported by the research funding and the re-spending of dollars in the local economy.

“We take great pride in our role in improving human health – and our direct role in Michigan’s economy,” said James O. Woolliscroft, M.D., dean of the Medical School and the Lyle C. Roll Professor of Medicine.

Realtor.com compiled a list of the top ten turnaround towns in the United States. Several factors were analyzed including unemployment rates, annual changes in median list price, median age of inventory and total listings. According to Realtor.com, the top ten turnaround towns show the greatest promise for growth and price appreciation despite the national economic situation.

With prices up and inventory down, Ann Arbor rounded out the top ten. According to Realtor.com’s October data, median list prices increased more than 8% year-over-year, while total inventory is down almost 25%. In addition, home sale prices are also steadily increasing, 4.4% for the year to be exact. Realtor.com also stated that the supply of homes is now considered balanced, with a 6.8 month supply of inventory at the current rate of sale, a decrease of 11% over last year’s numbers.

The Top Ten Turnaround Towns include:

  3. Fort Myers – Cape Coral, Florida

For the fourth consecutive year, the City of Ann Arbor was recognized by e-Republic’s Center for Digital Government and Digital Communities magazine as the 5th “Best Digital City” in the country for using technology to create a seamless environment between local government and citizens.

The City of Ann Arbor’s website features a variety of resources intended provide users with easy access to information. Several online initiates of the City of Ann Arbor were recognized including:

  • Online Permitting for High Volume Customer. Working closely with DTE Energy, the city was able to develop an online intake process for right-of-way permits using the city’s public facing permitting site.
  • A2 OpenBook. An online tool designed to disclose all City of Ann Arbor expenses, A2 OpenBook is transparent, simple and easy-to-use.
  • A2 Performance Dashboard. The performance dashboard, in conjunction with the city’s Citizen Guide to Finance and Budget, provides statistics regarding fiscal stability, economic strength, public safety and quality of life for all citizens to view.
  • Interagency Technology Collaborations. The city worked with Washtenaw County and the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority to develop a framework for interagency technology collaboration. To date, the agencies, combined, have recognized more than $3 million in cost avoidance by sharing data centers, hardware, enterprise software, and services.

All cities with a population of 30,000 or more are considered for the survey. Up one place from 2010, Ann Arbor was 5th among cities with a population of 75,000 to 124,999.

Reinhart’s South Office – 500 East Eisenhower Parkway, Suite 200 – is hosting an Art & Craft Fair on Friday, November 18 from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Proceeds from the Art & Craft Fair will go to the Pat Williams Memorial Fund, a Fund established to care for and support Pat and her family during her terminal illness. “The Fund” has also provided meals and good cheer to south office agents who have found themselves in the hospital, sick, injured or caring for a relative.

The Fund has previously donated to the Caring Bridge Website. The agents of the Reinhart Office have chosen Ele’s Place, a healing center for grieving children, as the recipient of charitable contributions from The Fund in 2012.

The Reinhart South Office Art & Craft Fair will feature glass work; fine art paints; note cards; herbs and spices; jewelry and hair accessories; water colors; crochet pieces; Christmas ornaments and much more. In addition, there will also be a raffle for a Coach purse.
